A Guide to IPAF Training – Which course is right for me?

What is IPAF Training and Who Needs It?

The globally recognised organisation International Powered Access Federation is responsible for developing training standards for powered access equipment operators. They aim to design courses that improve safety, reduce accidents and ensure participants understand how to operate Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) correctly. Successful participants receive and IPAF PAL Card which is recognised both in the UK and internationally.

IPAF 1B Training: Static Boom Operator Course Explained

Static boom platforms are covered in the IPAF 1B category. These platforms set up before use typically with outriggers, this means they cannot be driven when the platform is elevated. As they have excellent reach, they are typically used for maintenance and utility applications.

Typical IPAF 1B Machines:

  • Vehicle-mounted cherry pickers
  • Truck-mounted access platform
  • Trailer-mounted boom lifts
  • Spider lifts

Professionals who need an IPAF 1B Training?

  • Telecoms engineers
  • Utility contractors
  • Tree surgeons
  • Building maintenance specialists

IPAF 3A Training: Scissor Lift Operator Course Explained

Unlike IPAF 1B MEWPs, IPAF 3A platforms can typically be driven when elevated. These platforms travel vertically and are commonly found in construction, warehousing and industrial environments.
